What is shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain is a condition where the shoulder aches, is painful to move, and can worsen if left untreated. There are four different types of shoulder pain, each presenting with various symptoms resulting from other causes. The most common type of shoulder pain is an aching sensation, which results from damage to the rotator cuff or overuse of the shoulder joint. Some patients also experience sharp shoulder pain or shooting/radiating shoulder pain, which can be debilitating and negatively impact their daily activities. People with rheumatoid arthritis or other arthritic conditions may also experience a warm or burning sensation in the shoulder joint and surrounding area.

What causes shoulder pain?

Different things can cause shoulder pain, and the intensity with which it develops is based upon the cause of the pain and the patient's overall health. Some of the most common causes of shoulder pain are inflammation or damage to the tendons, known as tendinitis or bursitis. Other common causes may include bone spurs, a broken shoulder bone, dislocated shoulder, a frozen shoulder, overuse, nerve injury, poor posture, or a tear in the rotator cuff.

What are the symptoms of shoulder pain?

Common signs and symptoms of shoulder pain include warmth and redness in the shoulder, neck pain, arm pain, upper back pain, popping sensation when moving the arm, muscle stiffness, muscle weakness, and limited range of motion. Some patients also experience sudden, intense pain, swelling, or arm deformity.
